Baby mine

The news will be published on my work Weblog tomorrow, so I may as well share it here first: Rob and I are expecting a baby girl sometime in the next month!

We're thrilled, obviously. but since I'm an older first-time mom, I didn't want to post too soon and jinx anything. We have so many friends who would love to have babies now, but can't for whatever reason, and it is impossible not to temper our joy with an awareness of what they're going through.

I still feel weird writing about it! I know some people are so effusive with this kind of news, with belly photos and baby blogs and countdown clocks, but maybe because I'm from Minnesota, maybe because I'm just private, that's not me.

We're moving into a magical, scary world that we can't possibly see from here, and for now, just moving into it together is enough.

  9. Gael,
Confreakingradulations!!!! I too am an older first time mom and I have successfully made it through the first 2.5 years. Best of luck to you and Rob. I had such a great labor that I was ready to go again as soon as I delivered, you will do great and all will turn out the way it should. I can’t wait to read about this latest addition to your life. It truly was the best thing we had ever done. If you ever feel like you need to vent to another decrepit mom feel free.

  12. Congratulations!

My wife and I were 38 years old when we had our daughter, who is now an energetic and imaginative six-year-old. I am SURE you will do just fine as new parents.

Because we were married for 15 years without a child, we found making the adjustment from our carefree kidless lifestyle to be quite challenging in the early going. Now that our daughter is old enough to do more activities, we are all enjoying this time together, but it was hard to be patient for this time to arrive.

Best of luck to you and Rob!!!

  17. Oh, YAY! And CONGRATULATIONS! How thrilling.

I think it IS a MN thing. I didn't want to tell anyone EVER and then when I did I made them shut up about it IMMEDIATELY.

I love the "maybe because I'm from Minnesota"... Here in the upper midwest, we still have a sense of privacy.

Anyway, congratulations in any case and how exciting!

well I get all my news through this and through Mom, so be sure to post tidbits about the sweet little pea often... I don't imagine you will have time or energy to keep up with all your family as well as little ol' me... although she will be my only blood neice or nephew... (picking up on the guilt trip?) Good luck in the last month... here's hoping for easy labor and an easy baby!! xoxo, your s-i-l

Wonderful! Congratulations. It's the best. Just remember, if you're really, really, really tired at the beginning, that's TOTALLY normal and gets easier. :)

From a long-time reader and random commenter-- I had my son when I was 20 and my daughter when I was 35. I can tell you that they were both amazing in different ways. :) My son and I were very close as he was growing up, and I like to think that's because I remembered so closely what he was going through at each stage. My daughter is only 3 now, but I cherish her in a different way than I did my son. I loved my son and enjoyed him as a young child, but I think because now, I know how fast things go and my own life experience has broadened, I have a different appreciation of a child, and my daughter gets to be the beneficiary of that. The past 3 years have gone by far too fast and I really wish she would slow down. But I'm loving every minute of it. :)

You'll do fine. Always follow your instincts and don't assume that other women know your child better than you do.

What works for some, doesn't work for others and a lot of this you have to make up as you go along. :)

Sleep when the baby sleeps, and DON'T feel guilty about it!

Hire a housekeeper and start finding casseroles you like. (Nothing is easier to make than a casserole and you will not have the energy to spend on cooking gourmet dinners.)

When people ask you what you need, tell them. Let them help you. They enjoy it and you'll appreciate it.

Take film pictures as well as digital. The digital will never get off the computer and you'll want to have pictures in your hand.

Breathe deep and trust yourself. Most of this comes to you on it's own.

    Congratulations!

Congrats Gael! Be sure to let us know how it all went and what name you choose! Baby girls are so much fun. A fellow classmate of ours from CST is due with #10 (also a girl, next month!) and I have to admit, it's so much more fun to buy girl outfits!

  45. Congratulations! If you can aim for November 5, by all means, do so. It's Bryan Adams' birthday, and Ryan Adams' birthday. I don't know if it gets much cooler than that. ;)
