55 years ago at Disneyland

This charming footage of Disneyland in 1957 is mind-blowing.

As always, when I see nostalgic footage this good I think about all the things the people in this footage couldn't possibly know. The wars, the disasters, the inventions yet to change their lives. I wonder what would happen if you sat down next to someone on the Jungle Cruise and told them that "in 2001, two buildings that aren't even built yet are going to be destroyed, and the world will change in many ways because of it."

Wonder Twin dentures, activate!

"Super Golden Friends" takes a look at what would happen if the Super Friends crossed over with "The Golden Girls."

Marshmallow torture

Yes, we all love S'mores, but won't someone THINK OF THE MARSHMALLOWS? (Via the awesome Bubbledog.)

Help! The informercial medley

OK, this is pretty darn funny. Infomercial characters, the dumbest and klutziest people alive.

Man, the people who do these mash-ups are brilliant. (Thanks to Anna for the link!)

Mini Wheats hot tub

So I just saw the below commercial for the first time, and it kind of cracks me up. Every winter, some food product that should not be served hot tries to wedge its way into the "warm you up" product pantheon, and now it looks like Kellogg's Mini-Wheats is the latest.

I can take or leave Mini-Wheats on a regular day, but there's no way I would eat them with hot milk poured over them. Uck.

Hey Edward. Hey Bella. Hey Jacob.

"New Moon" in one minute. Heh. (Thanks to Anna for the link!) The best part is when the dog's mouth moves.

Jane Street! Jones Street! PARK AVENUE!

Oh you guys came through big time! No WONDER I couldn't find my lost sign song...it wasn't on "Sesame Street" after all, but on "Electric Company," which I adored as a kid. (Still seems more like a "Sesame" skit to me...I don't remember EC doing that many like this.)

It's awesome! I even remember the hippie bearded cabbie throwing up his hands, all "what can ya do?" I'm definitely going to have to show this to Kelly. And then at the end, the show plays it again with no vocals, and you're supposed to sing along. Is it OK to admit that I did just that? Hooooome sweeeet hooooome!

THANKS!

Thanks for 40 years, Sesame Street

I love old-school "Sesame Street," but damn if they aren't doing some great things on it today.

Check out the Plain White Ts singing about the letter T to the tune of their hit, "Hey There Delilah."

"Hey there, that's Tina, she's a T wearing a tube top..."

Is it "V," or "Five"

Please, people. Like the new "V" will ever have a scene to rival this:

That's my daughter, in the water, every time she fell I caught her

This song makes me BAWL. That is all.

I'm Luke, I'm five, and my dad's Bruce Lee

Rob and I fell in love with "The JCB Song" and its charming, lovely video a few years ago. I hope Kelly has such silly, wonderful memories of her childhood some day. (JCB is a company that makes loaders and other big construction equipment, in case, like me, you were wondering.)

View-Master rules

Matt at Scrubbles shared this old View-Master ad, which features the most all-star cast of its day: Henry Fonda! Jodie Foster! Christopher "Peter Brady" Knight!

Just for the taste of iiiiiiiit

Man, how is it that old commercial jingles sometimes stick in my head for a quarter of a century, but I can't remember the plot of a book I read last year?

The very first Diet Coke jingle has been bumping around my brain lately. This was from 1983, when diet pop was still suspicious. (Fresca and Tab, much as I like them, distinctly have a "diet" chemically taste that Diet Coke managed to eliminate.)

So when Diet Coke came out, rich daddy Coke went all out to introduce its new little cousin with this extravagant, celebrity-filled commercial and a damn catchy jingle. If you're old like me, you'll remember it: "Introducing Diet Coke! You're gonna drink it just for the taste of it! Diet Coke, yeah, Diet Coke! This is the one from Coca-Cola!" (As if a Pepsi product would dub itself Diet Coke.)

Anyway, here's the jingle, and a little glimpse into what my brain has been humming lately, for NO APPARENT REASON.

In a world...where the voiceover guy is gone

If you get a chance, watch this video about Don LaFontaine, who just died. What an awesome talent, and what a sweet-sounding man.

Does Barry Manilow know you raid his wardrobe?

Kids who were too young to see "The Breakfast Club" are now remaking scenes from it in a JC Penny ad.

Oh fer misguided nostalgia.

"Then, try to bust your opponent's balls..."

So awesome: This 1975 Mego marble-snapping game is called "Ball Buster."

I am unsure about whether this was a real game and real ad, or an SNL skit or something. Because there's background laughter, but maybe the ad was taped for YouTube off some show and the audience was laughing? It sure seems real.

In the end, Ye Olde Seventies husband actually calls his wife a "ball-buster," and she turns around and winks at the camera. So if it was real, the company was totally in on the ribaldry of the name. And if it was fake...well, it's not quite funny enough to be fake, is it?

When yer hot, yer hot!

Found this Funny Face commercial via a similar one linked at the Waffle Whiffer Zone. Funny Face drink mix and iron-ons, what could be more 1970s?
