Buried Belvedere

In 1957, Oklahoma buried a new Plymouth Belvedere car for 50 years. They held a contest and whoever guessed Oklahoma's population in 2007 would win the car in 2007, when it was unburied.

The closest guesser, however, died in 1979, and the car? Well, it didn't quite make it out in great shape.

Not to be daunted, Oklahoma buried another car for 2057.

The Harlequin?

Also on Jalopnik: They had a post asking which factory car color was the worst ever and in the comments, someone pointed out a multi-colored car called the VW Polo Harlequin. It was real! Though they didn't make that many, and only in the UK.

Made in ... Ontario?

That Eminem-Chrysler ad everyone loved, with the slogan "Imported from Detroit"? Almost featured a car that's made in Ontario.

Fascinating look at some of the internal business issues that went into the making of that Super Bowl commercial.

Um, Dad?

Automotive journalist borrows $180,000 Porsche to write about it.

Automotive journalist's teen son wants to show it off to his friend, rolls it through their garage door, causing $11,000 damage.

Oops.

I aspire not to drive an Aspire

My favorite: The Studebaker Dictator.

Heh, this reminds me of one of the funniest books ever: Crap Cars. If you haven't read it, you MUST, even if you're not really a car geek.

10 cars that brought down Detroit

DAMN YOU, CHEVROLET VEGA!

Also, while Rob kinda liked the Pontiac Aztek, even though I have kind of a weakness for Pontiacs, I think it was one of the weirdest-looking cars ever.

I wish there was a tape-recording of the meeting where someone suggested it have a built-in tent because...lunacy.

'57 Chevys

When I was in high school, a kid at our brother school drove a '57 Chevy, complete with fuzzy dice. It was very cool, and is probably the only reason I still remember that kid's name today.

However, this urban legend about a secret group of GM employees furtively producing '57 Chevys on their own is untrue. It's a shame it's made up, because can't you just see the movie now?

Also, if you're a fan of 1950s cars, there are some wicked commemorative stamps you should check out.

Futility vehicle

This SUV owner's confessional is kind of funny, if only because it feeds the mentality of hybrid drivers like myself who like to rage against giant SUVs that block my sightlines in traffic and blithely hog up compact parking spaces.

However, I can pronounce "Civic"

I drive a Honda Civic hybrid now, but we did consider a Toyota Prius. I didn't get it because I wasn't fond of the humped-up snail shape, but now that I think about it, it's a good thing I didn't because I can never remember how to pronounce "Prius."

The word looks like "prior" to me, so I want to say it that way. To rhyme with "pious" (heh--not that we hybrid owners are ever pious) or "pry us out of this car." But it's really pronounced "Pree-us," and I cannot get that through my head.

Anyway, today I found this funny article on the name. I'm not the only one!
