Lonely diner

The diner in Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" never existed.

Well, I never thought it did, but in a way, it's a million diners in a million towns.

I remember staring at it at the Chicago Art Institute, transfixed.

A class remembered

Artist Laurie Munn found a 1965 high-school yearbook set out with the trash -- a yearbook which, it later turned out, may have belonged to a man who died --possibly of an AIDS-related suicide.

She took it, and ended up painting portraits of each of the graduating seniors based on their yearbook photos. Not only that, but she's seeking out the graduates themselves for interviews. Fascinating.
