Questions the Prez was smart to skip

So President Obama answered questions on Reddit, which was awesome. Now Buzzfeed has a list of questions he was smart NOT to answer.

Even though I love cats, this one cracked me up: "Why do you think there is not a White House cat? Is it because cats are horrible?"

Here's a little inside info on how Reddit got Obama to do an AMA.

The 5 most needlessly detailed Wikipedia entries

I love this: The 5 most needlessly detailed Wikipedia entries. Note that "Henry VI, Part 3" is one of them, at 25,000 words, and Cracked writes that for a mere 1,774 words more, a person could just "read the damn play."

Damn you, why aren't you single?

Where are you in the movie?

Where are you in the movie? is a kind of cool site.

Type in your birthdate and expected death date (!) and it tells you, if your life were a certain classic movie ("Star Wars" is one), where in that movie you are.

A little weird to understand at first, but kinda cool.

Oh, and I believe I am in Mos Eisley. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy!

Test your knowledge

This is pretty fun: WikiTrivia grabs a bit from a Wikipedia entry and blanks out some of the words, and you're left to identify the topic.

Wookiees don't live on Endor!

Ever wonder how your weather compares to "Star Wars" weather? Why, here you go!

Why do I get the feeling I'll be seeing a lot of Hoth? (Try the sample cities up top to see some of the different options.)

IF AN UNSTABLE HANGOVER

There are a lot of anagram makers out there, but I really liked the results I got from this one.

My mom's name becomes IF AN UNSTABLE HANGOVER

Dad's is HIGHBROW JAPANESE DEFRAUDS (Uh, he did fight the Japanese in WW II. Just sayin'.)

If I use my first, middle, maiden and married name, I get BELEAGUER POORISH ANGEL-FACE

Kelly's is PEAKY LOOKER CELL

And Rob's is OBJECT SO PROPER HERO

Just call me "Foxcraft"

The post on "Renegade" led me to this: Get your own Secret Service code name.

Also, two commenters noted that it seems silly to have Secret Service code names that everyone knows, but the Chicago Tribune claims that "the monikers are a throwback to a time when electronic communications were not encrypted, and they no longer serve a security function."

Whatever. I still like to picture some big burly dude in sunglasses talking into his watch and saying "Renegade is on the move, repeat, Renegade is on the move."

Disturbing Strokes

This show was creepy enough already but the addition of ominous music takes the creep level right through the roof.

(Via Kottke.)

And as an antidote, my friend Denise O. reminds me of this one: "The Shining" as a comedy.

Gmail themes

So talk to me about Gmail themes. Have you found any fun ones that you recommend?

I tried Tea House for a while and really liked it, but it got a little boring -- the little creatures kind of do the same thing after a while.

I thought I might like Ninja, but eh, it was boring. Bus Stop even more so...it didn't seem to ever change. How long does it take that one kid to climb up the giraffe's neck, anyway?

I've been trying the various scenery ones, but so far, so boring. What themes have you liked?

Is that link dead, or just sick?

Want to know how many bookmarks/favorites I have? 1693, that's how many. Most of them are sorted excruciatingly well, but I keep bumping them along from computer to computer and it's kind of overwhelming.

So when I saw this program, which goes through all your bookmarks and finds dead links, on Ask Metafilter today I had to try it out. And it worked...found a LOT of dead links...but now I can't figure out how to transfer that knowledge to my actual brower. I only had a few minutes to look at it, so I'll give it another try soon.

Facebook frenemies

Jezebel has an interesting post on finding out via someone changing their Facebook status that they hold completely different political views from you.

Sure, it seems silly, but I find it a fascinating little look at a little part of the online experience. These are people who you may not be close enough for them to email you their political beliefs, but to see them in black-and-white may be something you can shrug off, or may really get your goat.

Have a cool summer! BFF!

My friend Kim Carney found Yearbook Yourself, where you can upload a photo of yourself into the stereotypical yearbook shot of various decades.

See yourself with 80s big hair, or Farrah feather hair from the 70s, or...oh, wait, I can just look in my real yearbooks for that.

I uploaded one of almost-10-month-old Kelly, and cracked up as I saw a little bit of what my little girl might look like in the goofy styles of yesteryear.

Other lives

I don't read many online journals any more -- I used to, but so many of the good ones are gone, and I'm more interested in Weblogs these days. But I just rediscovered one of my all-time favorite journals -- Willa's Journal -- and have been getting caught up on it.

Willa has so many neat things going on in her life -- crafting earrings, two loving cats and a cool husband, a neat job where she's surrounded by creative people and dogs -- yet her life has a nice quiet sense to it that is missing from so many more dramatic, soap opera-y journals. I think she carries her own calm with her.

She reminds me of my wonderfully artsy co-worker Kim.

Ricers

Use your vocabulary knowledge to donate food at FreeRice.com.

I think it's pretty cool how they show the rice in the bowl increase as you answer more questions correctly. My friend Lisa apparently answered the questions so quickly that the site couldn't even keep up with her.

Hmmph

We Minnesotans are often accused of being passive-aggressive. Thus we probably contribute quite a bit to Passive-Aggressive Notes.

Hilarious to read through--like FOUND Magazine with a specific attitude.

Jesus might love you, but your rear tyres are bald!

Lactose-intolerant readers need not apply

The Web has some classics that just never get old. I Can Has Cheezburger is one for me these days, and I can't forget the Amazon.com reviews of Tuscan milk. Hilarious.

Sometimes I hate people, and then sometimes I think we're a big ol' glorious species where most folks are actually in on the joke. The milk reviews help me buy into the latter.
