Climb every mountain

I heard a news report today about an accident on Disneyland's Matterhorn, and the announcer noted, oddly, that the ride was inspired by the movie "Third Man on the Mountain," a 1959 film I had never heard of.

It's funny, most of Disneyland's rides spark at least some familiarity -- Peter Pan, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, etc. But I guess "Third Man on the Mountain" came out when Disneyland was fairly new, and they needed more ride inspiration.

I guess it never occurred to me that anything inspired the Matterhorn -- I figured ol' Walt wants a mountain ride, he builds a mountain ride, and the name was generic enough to fit anything.

I have a subscription to a magazine ("The E Ticket") that goes into frankly obsessive detail about various Disneyland rides. The most recent issue was on the Matterhorn, and it included tidbits like Walt mailing a Matterhorn postcard to the Imagineers with the words "Make it look like this".
