My kind of pizza, Chicago is

At work, my friend Jon and I participated/friendly feuded in a pizza package.

He does a serious take on New York pizza, and offers up a recipe that I'm sure is fab, but is probably much too complicated for me.

Meanwhile, I defend Chicago's deep-dish honor. The fight is on!

Jon: " I firmly side with Ed Levine, who holds that deep dish is at best a “mighty tasty casserole” — sharing little in common with the true Neapolitan, or Neapolitan-American, form of this most infallible food."

Me: "Give me buttery crust as fat as a Bears lineman and as tall as the Sears Tower, and I’ll let the five boroughs have their delicate little crusts."

Amy, honey, you've missed out on Lou Malnati's! Arguably the best pizza in the city. Until I was in my twenties, I didn't even KNOW there was such a thing as "New York Syle Pizza" and when I heard that there was, all I could think was, "but who would want to eat that when they could have Chicago style?" So I'm with you and Gael here! Chicago style pizza womps New York style pizza every day of the week. Looking for a sleeper pizza hit in Chicago? Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder. . . you will not be disappointed.

Before my gastric bypass, I would agree that Chicago is THE best style of pizza. Now that I can't eat a whole lot of bread and stuffing type foods, I always have to choose New York Style. Bah!

Can't I love both? Why must I choose? Maybe I'm taking the easy way out, but I consider them two different dishes unsuitable for comparison. I grew up on New York style and when I think pizza, I think of that. But having lived in Chicago for the past 8 years I love me some deep dish.

Have you been out to The Pizza Place out in North Bend? The owners hail from Chicago and have really great pizza. I prefer the pizza pie (crust on bottom and top, topping inside, sauce on the side - YUM), but they do a Chicago deep dish, too.
