PCJM was inspired by an early crop of 1999 Weblogs, but perhaps the most influential at the time was Jorn Barger's Robot Wisdom. Some say he came up with the term Weblog, and I'm willing to believe that. (I'm not comfortable with his political opinions about Israel that later emerged, but then I never read his site for the politics.)
Anyway, he was apparently found homeless and broke in San Francisco. This Wired News story has more; Metafilter debates Barger's contribution to blogging.
