Stuck in the '70s

I've raved about Wes Clark's Avocado Memories before, it's one of my favorite sites on the entire Web. He still updates from time to time, and last fall he posted this link to a page from the Williams-Sonoma catalog.

Notice anything...familar?

Raise your hand if you grew up with at least one avocado or harvest gold appliance in your house. Oh yeah, you know who you are. I think our entire kitchen was avocado back on Owasso.

The catalog page does not fully capture the horror of seeing those things in the stores. The "Dijon" colored mixer is actually kind of glittery (putting the "gold" in "Harvest Gold"), like the kind of mixer you imagine that Jermaine DuPre would have.

Do you remember the turquoise color too? That was another 60's/70's option. We lived in one house with the turquoise appliances, then moved to a house with harvest gold. Then I scored the hat trick - when I got married I moved into a house that had the avocado appliances!!! (They have since been replaced with black.)

dear mom and dad,
although it was not my decision, i feel much guilt for the fact that you are waiting until i graduate from grad school to re-do your kitchen (complete with almost non-working harvest gold stove). i promise to be done by May so you can get yourselves out of Harvest Gold purgatory.
Best,
your loving daughter

But these colors are cinnamon, olive, dijon, and terracotta!

Why on Earth would such stylish and cutting-edge colors make you think of copper, avocado, harvest gold, and burnt orange?

I still have harvest gold linoleum in my kitchen (and laundry room), with matching canisters and stove vent. The dishwasher was covered over with a cream colored panel to match the refrigerator.
