For EDUCATIONAL

Oh man, I love Mtigwhatever storylines, but Elly's flashbacks are just so simplistic and lame.

Even Natives like iPods! And have to fix their church roofs! Get it? They can both follow their traditional customs, AND join in with our modern privileges and problems. Imagine that!

Here's the thing: I think it's quite cool that a comic strip is attempting to depict modern life among native people. For me as an American, who's familiar (somewhat) with our own Native tribes, it's even more interesting that these are Canadian First Nations' people. And I know it must be hard to shoehorn a joke into what is essentially a sociology lesson. But I just hate that it feels so forced, and the Mtigiwhateverans are so perfect.

I don't know what I expect, really. FOOB has felt forced overall since about the time Mike and Deanna wed, and that's also about the time the Pattersons themselves became perfect, incapable of making mistakes or having negative emotions.

But I still like the strip, Mom! If you really want to name your new kitten "Shiimsa," it's OK! Although I personally am holding out for "Snickers."

My gripe these days, especially with today's strip: I couldn't tell who was receiving the iPod as a gift--was it Elly or someone else? Many of the adults are all starting to be drawn alike, especially if you can't see their hair and if they sometimes wear glasses, sometimes don't. They all eventually meld into the Same Person in FOOBland.

My question is: what would you order for lunch at the powwow? I'm almost certain I'd have to go for the Indian taco.

Oh my god, I so want to go to the powwow where they give away ipods. Because that has never, ever happened at any of the ones that I've been at. Not even the ones I organized. Jebus.

It's nice that she's pretending to take an interest, but to do it in such a patronizing way is...well, we're kind of used to that, so it's not much of a surprise. At least she didn't make them give her a name. But, uh, we aren't Natives of either country. We have territories based on tribal affiliation, not borders.
