Have a great summer

I stumbled upon this 1960 yearbook page while Googling something else. Looks like it's part of a class reunion site.

What cracks me up is how the page is worded, as if to try and make the graduating seniors feel just horrible about graduating. "The doors of Mira Costa have closed on you, the class of '60. Never again will you walk through the halls and feel 'I belong'. Your high school days are past and all you have now is memories."

They may as well have added KILL YOURSELF NOW! YOU WILL NEVER SMILE AGAIN! LIFE IS OVER FOR YOU!

And then the seniors aren't labeled "Seniors," but instead "Witnesses of Progress." OK, barf, but also, shouldn't that be "Witnesses TO progress"? Never mind.

Also, I don't know what is cooler, the bow ties on the boys or the girls' hairstyles that make them look like they're 55 years old.

That's the school where my mother went! I think 1960 is a little early for her, but she might have perhaps known some of those people as neighbors or something.

H(arold) Stannard was a social studies teacher at MCHS in the 60s. He was a popular teacher but kind of cocky-cool. Probably finished high school himself a few years before the Great Depression started (in more ways than one).

The school pictures were taken at a photography studio in the summer before classes started and everyone wore the same shoulder-covering clothing, including the goofy bow ties. Just below camera view, the incoming seniors were generally wearing hyper-casual beach clothes.

HOLY CRAP!! I went to Mira Costa in Manhattan Beach Calif. You know who else went there?!? Quinton Tarentino. Yes, the freak actually came from a very nice, upper middle class town. I used to rent my videos from him back in the 80's at Video Archives. He would try to get us to watch crap like "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" because of the great cinematogrophy, when all we wanted was "16 Candles". Go figure.
