The future, as seen from 1979

Usually I'm sad that the futures we envisioned in the past didn't come to pass, but this 1979 vision of the future looks pretty hideous.

They got some of the stuff right, like flat-screen TVs and reading news onscreen, but I'm glad we don't have to wear stupid jumpsuits and watch caveman-like soccer players.

It also says "By 1990, most mail will be sent in electronic form." They were only a decade off!

I especially like the guy videotaping his neighbors. In the future, we'll all be voyeurs!

Thanks for passing this on! This is priceless (especially the caveman-like soccer players).

I always think it's interesting how many older visions of the future include some obsequious robot proferring drinks or doing other butler-like functions. Unlike the e-mail, flat screen TV and DVD equivalents listed here, almost NO serious effort has been invested in building the obsequious robot butler market. Now why is that???

Also love that the bookshelf against the back wall has a shelf for LPs.
