Pigging out

Apparently Miss Kelly was born in the Chinese Year of the Pig, which may not sound that great to us, but is considered extra-lucky in China. There is some debate over whether she was born in the Golden Year of the Pig or the Earthen Year, but no one is debating the Pig part.

Her father was born in the Year of the Dragon, and her mother in the Year of the Sheep/Goat, depending on the particular placemat your local Chinese restaurant gets.

I'm a golden pig. There are unlucky years as well. My great-aunt was born on the year of the horse, and it was an especially unlucky horse year (I forget the details) for girls. Birth rates were very very low that year. Her parents were afraid that no one would marry a girl so unlucky, and went to great lengths to make sure she got an education so that she could support herself. She had a college degree in the days when most girls stopped attending school after 6th grade. She taught English at a girls' school and eventually married a man who fell in love with her for her beauty and intelligence.

The autumn before the next Year of the Pig would be the perfect time for your next trip to Japan. You'll be able to pick up the most adorable inoshishi (Japanese wild boar) New Year's trinkets for Kelly.
