Good night, sweet Emily

Suzanne Pleshette, a.k.a. Emily Hartley on "The Bob Newhart Show," among other roles, has died at 70.

We watched some old "Bob Newhart Show" videos at Todd's this summer. It's easy to forget how smart and funny that show was. I remember reading that Newhart wouldn't let them write in some kids for Bob and Emily because he didn't want the show to be the kind of gag-filled, slapsticky show that sitcoms with kids often are, and it was a good decision. It also let us kids of the "Free to Be, You and Me" era grow up knowing that not everyone chooses to have kids, and that those people can have amazingly wonderful lives, too.

Also, Rob picked out our bed based in part on his lust for Bob and Emily's bed, with its built-in bookshelves.

I totally agree about Newhart showing that children are not an inevitability in a happy marriage. The original Newhart was sophisticated and hilarious.

And her appearance in the last episode of the second Newhart show - well, that might have been the single greatest sitcom moment ever.
