Kit Kat-san

I've written before about the wonderful Kit-Kat flavors we found in Japan (green tea! strawberry cheesecake!).

This article about them mentions one flavor that I don't think I could stomach or even smell: SOY SAUCE KIT-KATS.

You may commence your gagging now, right along with me.

Nestle says they've released 200 flavors in Japan over the past decade. I guess when you put out that many, you gotta try anything.

Oh, and the Impulsive Buy reviews it and says it tastes more like maple syrup than soy sauce. So there you go.

What doesn't make any sense to me is why they chose Kit Kats to try all those crazy flavors on. Seems like if they just used a generic cookie, it might be a bit more palatable. I understand about the "You will surely win" translation thing - but still... a chocolate covered green tea or soy sauce "treat"? Not in my world!

I agree with you on the soy sauce kk's. I also did not like the green tea ones. I have tried the banana ones and love those. I also recently got the roasted corn and sweet potatoe ones... NOT! yuck-o too. that is like getting a roasted corn on the cob and asking for chocoolate syrup on it. I was born in Japan via military in '66. I have tried many things over the yrs and thank the good lord I didn't live too long over there. Some things are not meant to be eaten!. I also try the many flavors of Pringles out there too. I have over 80 different pringles cans from my tasting adventures. Last taste this week was beer flavored candies, and wasabi doritos. Neiter are worth getting again. Good luck in your tasting adventures!

WHY KIT KATS? - the name of the candy sounds something like an expression for winning/good luck, and they get brought out for weddings, graduations, etc. This is their key to popularity and new flavors.

SOY SAUCE - actually very pleasant (I promise!) because it combines the sweet-salty flavors, like the salt-caramel kit-kats mentioned in the next entry. These are so. good.

WHAT'S NEXT? - I just came back from the 7-11 with a Royal Milk Tea Kit Kat. The package is super cute, with a tartan and a line of beefeaters. Can't tell you how it tastes yet

I wonder why Nestle has chosen Japan to release all of these goofy Kit-Kats in. Do they sell well over there? Intersting.....

Japan has lots and lots of seasonal and limited edition products, flavors, colors, etc. Pepsi has them too for instance. This summer was shiso (sort of minty), winter is red bean (nasty). There has also been a Hawaiian punchy thing and cucumber in previous summers. Everything here is very seasonal, and products are most popular when just released. I think manufacturers are banking on these two main principles...

Update on the ROYAL MILK TEA - DELICIOUS.
