The Kraken wasn't just a part of classical mythology, or modern movies. It was apparently feared by many sailors. Although perhaps not the Kraken from the original "Clash of the Titans," which was super-hokey.
I have to admit that every time that Clash of the Titans commercial comes on and Liam Neeson shouts "Release the Kraken!", I think about the gossip surrounding his--er--endowment, and giggle like an idiot. Because I'm 12.
I'm an entertainment editor at MSNBC.com, and have maintained Pop Culture Junk Mail since August, 1999. The New York Times called the site "one of the best places to explore pop culture online," and Entertainment Weekly included it on their Top 100 Web Sites list. If you like weird food, strange products, and 1970s and 1980s nostalgia, PCJM is your home away from home.
I have a brand new BOOK, written with Brian Bellmont. "Whatever Happened to Pudding Pops? The Lost Toys, Tastes and Trends of the '70s and '80s." Buy it online, and follow our retro reminiscing on our GenXtinct blog,Facebook, and Twitter.

There's a typo here. I think you meant to write that "the Kraken [...] was super-AWESOME!" Okay, maybe not scary. Merely awesome.
Loved the Kracken in the 2nd Pirates of The Carribbean movie, spraying green slime all over the always awesome Johnny Depp. :)
