Hic

Alcohol ads are not illegal on U.S. TV.

Like Girlhacker, I kind of thought they were, even though I've definitely seen some.

Not as many as when we were kids, though. Remember the Bailey's Irish Cream ads, and Martini & Rossi on the rocks, say YES?

I don't remember this Martini & Rossi ad featuring the World Trade Center -- I remember the embedded one below -- but the WTC ad is eerie to watch now.

I always thought it was against FCC rules to show people actually *drinking* alcohol in commercials. Or is that just another urban legend?

Gael: I sorely miss your commercial contest. Are you going to be doing one this year?

Beer and wine ads have been around since the early days of TV, and yes, the rule was that they couldn't be imbibed on screen

(Robert Klein bit...Father asks son "What's beer for?" Child replies "To hold up and look at, Daddy")

Only in the past 10 or 15 years have ads for "hard" liquor shown up, mainly on cable.
