Cold as ice

So I found this on the clearance rack at Marshall's and bought it for Kelly, because I loved my Easy-Bake Oven, and the little cakes were not actually half bad.

But this one cooks with ICE, not a light bulb. The mix has gelatin in it, I guess, and just like you have to put Jello in the fridge to let it set, you ice up this oven and then put the cakes in there to chill up.

And they're awful. Like melted plastic meets...I dunno, more melted plastic?

I'm gonna have to splurge for the real thing, with the light bulb, aren't I?

The new Easy-Bake ovens don't use a light bulb, unfortunately. Nothing tastes quite like a brownie baked by light bulb. =)

I was wondering about Easy Bake ovens over the holidays...they don't make real lightbulbs anymore, do they? Do the environmentally friendly ones get hot enough to cook with?

This doesn't surprise me at all. A lot of the Disney-Princess-related products are crap--very cheaply made. Fortunately, my daughters are on the tail end of that phase and moving on to Star Wars and American Girl--still costly, but at least you get what you pay for.

My mother would never get me an EZ Bake oven because she worried that I would burn myself. So I was reduced to "warming" crackers and cheese over the heat register instead. :-( Fast-forward to my late 30s when I found an EZ Bake oven on clearance and took the plunge. Wouldn't you know -- the model I purchased was recalled shortly after because new "safety" features they had added resulted in kids getting their hands stuck in the oven and getting burned. Why does my mom *always* have to be right??!!?
