Pass the syrup
Waffle House turns 50! What a long, strange, waffly trip it's been.
There are no Waffle Houses in Seattle, but when we were on our road trip through the South, each of us picked a number and we counted the Waffle Houses we saw, seeing whose number was closest. In the end? The number of Waffle Houses we saw was higher than the number anyone picked. That should tell you something about just how many Waffle Houses there are in the South. (Apparently there are 1,497, in 25 states. We didn't count quite that many...)

In my current hometown with a population of 80+K, we have five Waffle Houses. Two per each exit on the interstate that goes through the town and one on the outskirts of town where there's no interstate.
And every single one is packed at 3 in the morning on a Saturday.
We just got back from visiting my wife's family in rural Georgia a week or so ago, and managed to hit Waffle House twice while we were down there. On the drive out to my father-in-law's place from ATL, there's a Waffle House on pretty much every exit. Sometimes, there's *two* - one serving each side of the freeway.
I prefer my hash browns "smothered covered 'n chunked", thank you very much. :)
