Doin' the Courteney

Well, I never watched "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," but apparently a character on that show had a horrible dance that was based on the little arm-swingy thing Courteney Cox did in Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" video. If that is true, it is just so awesome.

It's true.

A running gag throughout the series was Carlton's enthusiastic love of singer Tom Jones and a gyrating dance he would perform to Jones' tune "It's Not Unusual." -via wikipedia

That's not just a Courteney Cox dance - that is the dance of the early '80s to me. On VH1's recent show about child stars, there's footage of Drew Barrymore about 8 years old, totally decked out in a big Madonna headband thing, doing those moves. And funny thing, last night "16 Candles" was on and I performed that very dance for my 11-year-old daughter, who was absolutely mortified that her mom was (is?) such a goob.

C'mon...everyone born between 1980 and 1985 know of the "Carlton Dance!"

Carlton also did that dance to the original "Oprah" theme song when the Banks family was on The Oprah Winfrey Show (and Mr. Banks tried to ignore the fact that Will was part of the family". If you have not seen Carlton do the dance, you simply must make a point to try. If you ever see that the "Oprah Winfrey" episode of Fresh Prince is going to be on Nick at Night, for God's sake, Tivo it. You owe it to yourself. I seem to recall that Carlton did that dance many times, certainly also in the Tom Jones episode. I hardly ever watched that show, but I certainly saw the Carlton dance.
