For GRANTHONY

While I was gone, "For Better or For Worse" returned to one of my most-hated and yet most-irresistable topics: Granthony, a.k.a. ancient, dorky, wimpy Anthony, Elizabeth's married ex-boyfriend, he of the snooty French-Canadian wife who hates both him and their baby.

OK, I get that we're supposed to hate Therese and feel for Anthony, but it's so slanted in that direction that I just can't get behind it. First off, who can believe that a woman would agree to carry a child for nine months, go through labor and delivery, live with said child, and yet all the time feel no more attached to said child as she would to a used Kleenex? We never saw Therese and baby Francoise interact, we never saw Therese be anything other than a complete jerk.

And other than Anthony's suddenly developing Superman-like powers and saving Liz from Evil Landscaping Guy Rapist way back when, all he's done is moon around about how much Therese sucks. There are one-note characters, there are one-track plotlines, but this is like...a fractional-note character on a one-rail plotline.

With the introduction of the name-like-a-big-anvil-on-your-head Mr. Wright, there's no way Liz is going to end up with anyone else by the end of the strip, right? So why even free up Anthony for her? Just to show that once you've loved a Patterson, you can never go back? Oh, the mind, it boggles.

Gael, I've been thinking about you all week and waiting for your post about FBOFW!

The suspense is killing me - ok, not really - will Liz choose Officer (w)Right or Granthony? If only my own life were so exciting...

Welcome back!

I read yesterday's comic and thought "I can't wait to read what Gael thinks about THAT!"

Yay, you're back and commenting on Granthony! They're really ripping him apart on Comics Curmudgeon too.

Glad you had a good time in Puerto Vallarta. I went there once and lay on the beach at the hotel that was made famous in "Night of the Iguana." It was loverly.

HAAAAATE this plotline!! Why couldn't it have been an opportinity to show a) how parenting could work with the father at home instead of the mother, or b) how poor communication in a marriage could nearly lead to its end, or c) how Anthony was forced to GROW THE HELL UP and GET OVER LIZ when faced with a family?? So much wasted! Hate Granthony!

Count me among the flock who has been dying for you to post about Granthony. :-)

I hate this story line, and if Liz ends up with him, it will be so disappointing.

Someone on Comics Curmudgeon theorized that since Anthony's been in an unhappy marriage and has clearly been after Liz for a while, Therese perhaps didn't "leave" him of her own volition, if you catch my drift...

That would actually be the best way to wrap up this storyline, I think -- Oh, maybe Officer (W)right would even be the one to catch him! I so hope now that it turns out to be the ending (it probably won't though.) Maybe Anthony's cinnamon buns have a secret ingredient in them, some kind of specially rendered fat maybe... (Okay, I know, I'm morbid. Really though, this would all make perfect sense -- all these lame things woud come together at last!)
