Tough times at my old paper

Apparently two dozen of my old colleagues at the Star Tribune are taking a buyout and leaving the paper, including hilarious food writer (and my old neighbor!) Al Sicherman, and restaurant critic (and ethics columnist!) Jeremy Iggers.

Damn. The Taste section won't be the same without them.

Al lost his hilarious and smart son, Joe, to one of those deaths that sounds like an urban legend, but isn't: He took LSD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and fell out a window to his death. Maybe he thought he could fly, no one knows. But Al's tribute to his son, which must have been impossibly hard to write, is one of the best pieces of writing I've ever seen. I get a lump in my throat every single time I read it, and even though I never met Joe, I wish he was still in this world. We need more Joes, and more Als, too.

Thanks for sharing. That was a beautiful, heartbreaking article. We do need more people like them in the world.

I have printed the story and plan to share it with my 13 year old. I don't think you can start too early with the message. Kids do think they are invincible. I know I did.
