Stuff we miss

Fun NY Times article on how just when you get accustomed to a certain product, it vanishes or changes.

I've whined often about the things I miss. Pepsi Lite. Marathon candy bars. Burger Chef. The Pop Shoppe. (Gee, a lot of junk food...) But I also miss products whose brands I can no longer remember...the makeup that was the perfect color for my skin, or that one weird perfume that I just loved.

Feel free to share what you miss in the comments.

Oh, and also? The guy who said "White is wicked hot in watches" is a Casio SENIOR manager? Because that quote sounds like something my Boston-based penpal would have said when we were 13, and "wicked" was apparently TRES cool in Boston slang. But hey, in keeping with the article, maybe "wicked" was his favorite slang term from his childhood and he's determined to bring it back.

Victoria's Secret always discontinued the body splashes I loved! The only one that has always been around is the pear, which is great, but I miss my Whispering Mist!

This will probably totally date me, but back when I was in high school in the late 80's, Loreal Nail Polish had a color called Grecian Lilac that I LOVED! Of course they discontinued it and I haven't been able to find a color that I love as much since then!

Also, my sister-in-law was born and raised in the Boston area and she still uses the term "wicked" all the time! :o)

Very sorry to hear about your step father-in-law but glad you were able to have some family time with he and your daughter.

Good to have you back to give me my "pop culture fix"! ~ Tanya in CA

This might be kind of dumb, but there was this ice cream cone cereal when i was a kid, and it was awesome. I'm sad it's gone.

"Wicked" is something very common in Boston as a modifier in place of very. I know 60-somethings who still use it regularly. It doesn't actually need bringing back, as it never went away.

Flicks chocolate candies. They were like large, flat Kisses, and came in a tube. I loved them. Another company recently bought the rights to make these, and I was super excited, but they were really, really bad. So either I had poor taste as a kid, or the receipe is severely changed. Wish I just had my memories.

Star Bar (I can still remember the jingle!)

Lever 2000's original scent. They have an "orignal" out again now, but it's not the same scent, which was a near-nothing smell. Lotions, soaps, and deodorants are the WORST in this category -- and they don't make very many unscented things anymore (grr), which makes it way worse...

I desperately miss the hot mustard sauce that McDonald's used to offer with its McNuggets. They discontinued it (with no warning, of course) and I haven't eaten a McNugget since.

And, since I also used to dip my fries in it, I have been forced to boycott McDonald's altogether. Except for breakfast; you can't beat a BLT bagel, hash browns and a Coke to start the day off right. I call it "the breakfast of fat-assed champions."

* Planters Cheez Balls. More artificially cheesy and saltier than Cheetos or other brands of so-called "cheese balls," and the asteroids aren't the same - different ratio of cheese to corn-flavored inside.

* Taco Light from Taco Bell. Like a Taco Supreme, but in a deep-fried flour tortilla shell. Not sure what made it "light"; the deep-frying, perhaps?

* Libby's Asian Favorites. The Cashew Chicken was really good. I don't know why they stopped making them.

* Tamalitos - does anyone remember these? Little baby tamales in a chili sauce. I used to take them in a thermos to school for lunch. Soooo good.

* Country Apple bath gel from Bath & Body Works. They bring it back every now and then for a short period of time, but I miss when I could just pick some up whenever I felt like it. I also really liked the Warm Sunshine scent and Daffodil, and they aren't available anymore, either.

As you can see, I have a bit of a hard time letting go of things that I once really enjoyed that don't exist anymore. I guess I hope that if I keep dwelling on them, eventually they'll be brought back.

I am pretty sure I have this Truman Show thing going on at all the stores I shop at because whatever I like, they discontinue! I mean why continue to make products that combine chocolate and caramel and more cholcolate when you could introduce new Jalepeno Bacon Mint Peanut Crispies.

Dolly Madison Chocolate Pies. I miss those so much. Now that I'm finally old enough to buy enough to eat myself sick, I've lost the opportunity.

Carnation Breakfast Bars. I lived on those in junior high and high school, and then one day they vanished.

Given the proliferation of that sort of thing these days, it looks like they were just ahead of their time. But nothing else tastes the same.

I second the Carnation Breakfast Bars. Those things were awesome.

I'm not sure if it's been totally discontinued, or if the stores in my town just don't carry it anymore, but I got hooked on Oatmeal Crunch and now I can't find it anywhere. It's basically instant oatmeal, but it came with a separate little packet of crunchy bits that you added to the oatmeal after you mixed in the hot water. Sooooo good. I've tried adding various crunchy cereals and granola to the regular oatmeal, but alas it is not the same!
