For LOVE OF MIKE

Here's my theory on this Robin-earache storyline in "For Better or For Worse." Deanna and Mike are stressed that they're taking too much time from their jobs to be with sick Robin. They're worried about him crying and disturbing the creepy Kelpfroth neighbors.

How to solve this? Mike quits his job, since the editing and writing work is seeking him out now (ha ha ha ha ha!) and Elly and John practically gift them with their big house, since Mike is obviously the Chosen Child. April? Eh, she can move in with Becky or something.

You watch, it will happen.

I think we are being set up for a gutting story of serious illness...Lynn Johnston hasn't really done that one yet.

Or Mike quits his day job and actually pitches in with the child-raising, and finds out how difficult is really is for working mothers.

Yeah I agree I think they are setting him up for having cancer or something - with the whole "low immunity."

A serious illness would be good, but so unlike Lynn Johnston. If this were Funky Winkerbean, the kid would be toast.

And again, I thought this was going to be the final year for FBOFW (unless she changed her mind on this), so it wouldn't do to introduce a major storyline like cancer now, would it? I think Gael is right, then Liz will marry Anthony, and all the kids with their kids will move in together to be one big happy family. Puke.

i think the kid's gonna die, and it will be a series of very special comicstrips. either that or elizabeth will have to come back to donate blood or marrow or something to save her poor nephew, and she'll run into anthony, get married, pop out the kids, wright will come back and fall for april (the miniliz) and will wait for her (his love will be pure and chaste from afar) and everything will tie up so nicely!

I think Robin will have a life changing illness and Mike, Dee and the kids will move back in with Elly & John so that Grandma Elly can be free childcare.

I am with everyone else on the cancer thing. It seems like exactly the kind of thing that strip is setting up for...I just hope that if she does it, it's as sensitively done as the Lawrence coming out storyline. I've seen a lot of my patients fighting childhood cancer, and I'm not particularly interested in a pollyanna-ish or inaccurate portrayal of it.

They're theorizing over on Comics Curmudgeon that it's second hand smoke from the Kelpfroths that's making the kid sick. They're probably right. That's why they keep talking about the Kelpfroths so endlessly in this storyline.

Gael --

Over on the FBOFW site, there's a feature where old -- often very old -- strips are reprinted. Observe the following:

It appears to be an unrecognizable version of Elly.
