Brace yourself

Jezebel's feature reviewing YA books we grew up with focuses on "Deenie." Man, did that book traumatize us, or what?

I don't know about at your school, but at my Catholic grade school, we had to go to the principal's office every year and be checked for scoliosis. It was traumatizing because you had to take off your shirt at a time when some of us were just getting bras, but it was also traumatizing because of the fear that you might end up wearing a gigantic, romance-squashing back brace like Deenie.

I forgot how pretty she was on the book's cover. Brace or no brace, what a dish.

Dangit, Gael--every time you link to fine lines, I lose two hours out of my day. And a visit to Jezebel is usually followed by a visit to the YA section of the public library, too.

Of course, I've been waiting for DECADES to discuss these books with someone who appreciates them as I do, so I guess I'm pretty susceptible.

Um, Deenie masterbated? I didn't masterbate until I was 30.

I went to a Catholic girls school in Sydney and we all got checked for scoliosis. I was so self-conscious about taking off my uniform! I have no idea if they do this check anymore.

Also, Deenie masturbating? That went completely over my head. That's what a Catholic education does to you.
